Red Dot Award
The Red Dot, the “Red Dot for highest design quality”, was awarded to the Levi Strauss Museum in 2001 by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen based in Essen. The “Red Dot Award” is considered the most demanding and largest design event on an international level.
Special Commendation As part of the European Museum Competition
The application for the “European Museum of the Year Award” was submitted in 2001. When assessing the candidates – a total of 61 museums from 21 European countries – the international jury paid particular attention to the exhibition design, the management and financing of the museum, the integration of the museum into the local and regional culture and, finally, the significance of the evaluated institution for the European museum landscape in general. Finally, in the summer of 2002, the Levi Strauss Museum was awarded a “Special Commendation”.
The jury, which came from 13 different countries, was particularly impressed by the fact that the Buttenheim museum was able to attract a broad international public response within a very short space of time. The Levi Strauss Birthplace was also singled out as a “role model for the ideal interplay between voluntary work, professional expertise and future-oriented local administration”.
